Couples tie the knot during a festival on Amsterdam's ring road

Getting the desired location to exchange wedding rings on Amsterdam's usually busy ring road seemed like a great omen for Zuzanna Lisowska and Yuri Iozelli's future together.

“It just seemed like a really fun idea,” Ms. Lisowska said. “And, you know, the statistics were on our side. There were 400 couples applying for it, so we were really happy we were chosen.”

Friends and strangers greeted each other with applause and “I dos” as part of a day-long festival on sections of the A10 highway that encircles the Dutch capital and was closed to traffic on the day.

“It was a wonderful party that we didn't have to organize,” Mr. Iozelli said.

Their only regret was that they couldn't bring their pet rabbit. “It was too hot,” Ms. Lisowska said after exchanging rings with Mr. Iozelli.

The city, known for its festivals, said about 600,000 people tried to get into the ring road festival last month when more than 200,000 free tickets were distributed.

Curious citizens, from parents pushing strollers to students and senior citizens, stopped to watch the weddings and enjoyed the unique opportunity to see the road without the usual noise of cars.

Among them was communications student Kyra Smith.

“It's really fun because it's a once-in-a-lifetime event,” she said. “It's so cool to be able to tell people, 'Wow, I got married with rings,' so I really enjoy that.”
