McCain Supports Strikes on Syria, Urges New Strategy for US in Syria

Moscow (Sputnik) – us Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate armed services Committee, expressed support for U.S. strikes on Syria in a statement and called for a new strategy in the region.

Earlier in the day, the US, Britain and France began air strikes on Syrian sites for reports of a chemical attack in the city Duma, allegedly carried out by the Syrian government.

“I applaud the President for military action against [Syrian President Bashar] Assad of chemical weapons and to signal his determination to do it again, if these heinous attacks will continue,” the Senator said in a statement.

McCain Thanked the United Kingdom and France to strike and expressed the hope that the strikes were “to impose significant costs on the Assad regime”.

“To succeed in the long term, we need a comprehensive strategy for Syria and the entire region. The President should state your purpose, and not just against ISIL, but also the ongoing conflict in Syria and the pernicious influence of Russia and Iran in the region. Airstrikes are disconnected from a wider strategy may be needed, but they alone will not lead to the achievement of US objectives in the middle East,” concluded McCain.

Damascus has denied reports of the attack, while Moscow has warned that the reported attack could be a provocation.

The official representative of the defense Ministry major General Igor Konashenkov said at a briefing on Friday that the video with the victims of the alleged chemical attack by the Duma in first aid, which was shared via social media, was staged. According to a spokesperson, the participants in the video were found, and they revealed the whole truth about the shooting.
