Iran's Supreme Leader Rejects US Position on Uranium Enrichment

Iran's supreme leader has criticised the US position on the country's nuclear programme, stressing that Tehran has no intention of seeking permission to enrich uranium and calling American claims “nonsense”.

“They say, 'We will not allow Iran to enrich uranium.' This is too much,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said during a memorial service for the late President Ibrahim Raisi, who died in a plane crash last year.

“Nobody in Iran expects their approval. The Islamic Republic has its own policy and course – and it will remain true to this direction.”

His comments came amid reports that indirect talks between Iran and the United States were ongoing, although he expressed doubt about their outcome.

“Yes, there were indirect talks under Raisi, as there are now,” he said. “But they led nowhere – and we don't expect much from the current ones either. Who knows what awaits us.”

His comments reflect Tehran's growing frustration with the deadlocked nuclear talks, as well as the broader tensions that have defined relations between the United States and Iran in recent years.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei told state news agency IRNA that “no final decision has been made yet on the next round of talks,” adding that “the Islamic Republic of Iran is considering the issue taking into account the contradictory and constantly changing positions of the American side.”

IRNA also reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran had received a proposal for the next round of indirect talks with Washington and was currently studying it.
