Britain's Prince Harry has suffered deep emotional trauma over boardroom disagreements that led to his resignation from the Sentebale charity, according to a source.
The source described the row, which saw Harry step down as patron in support of resigning trustees who disagreed with chairwoman Dr Sophie Chandauka, as a “hostile takeover”.
On Tuesday, the UK Charity Commission published a report into the incident, condemning all sides for making the fallout from the conflict public through interviews and statements, but the war of words continues.
Sentebale appeared to suggest that the allegations made by Dr Chandauka of harassment and misogyny within the charity (for which the commission found no evidence) could be pursued against individuals in “more appropriate ways”.
A source said: “This has been an emotional catastrophe for Prince Harry and (Sentebale co-founder) Prince Seeiso (Lesotho). What has been happening in recent months is nothing short of a takeover.”
Seeiso also stepped down as patron of the charity, which works in Botswana and Lesotho to help support the health and wellbeing of young people, particularly those living with HIV and AIDS.
The source added: “It is important to remember that Prince Seeiso and Prince Harry founded this charity almost 20 years ago to honour and continue the legacy of their mothers, Queen Mamohato and Princess Diana, and the work they did in southern Africa to support people living with HIV and AIDS.
“During their 19 years with the charity, they and many previous trustees have raised and distributed tens of millions of pounds.”
