Brazilian police foil plot to bomb Lady Gaga concert in Rio

Brazilian police say they have foiled an attempt to detonate a bomb at a Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro.

Saturday's event was the biggest show of her career, drawing nearly two million fans to Copacabana Beach.

Rio de Janeiro state police said they worked with the Justice Department to prevent the attack, which was believed to have been planned by a group spreading hatred against the LGBTQ community.

Police say the group was attempting to radicalise and recruit young people to carry out attacks using Molotov cocktails and improvised explosive devices.

“The plan was seen as a 'collective challenge' to attract attention on social media,” police said.

Authorities said they had arrested two people in connection with the planned attack – an alleged gang leader accused of illegal weapons possession in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul and a teenager accused of child pornography in Rio.

Authorities also said police raided the homes of 15 suspects in several Brazilian states and seized phones and other electronic devices.
