A few weeks ago, teachers in public schools in West Virginia went on strike. Now teachers in Oklahoma are taking a page from West Virginia’s playbook. Thousands of public school teachers took to the streets to demand $3.3 billion over the next three years for school funding, benefits, and wage increases for all state employees.
“Oklahoma teachers rebel against decades of state tax cuts, which caused a significant reduction in the cost of education,” explained VOX Alexia Fernandez Campbell, “cause about 20 percent of state schools to go to a four-day working week in accordance with the schedule and pushes the average teacher salaries in rank 49th in the country. Teachers have not received a raise in 10 years.”
