Google has announced enhanced security measures for the distribution of Android applications aimed at combating fraud and malware.

As Delo.ua writes, this is reported by TechCrunch.

Starting next year, the company will introduce mandatory identity verification for all developers distributing their apps on certified Android devices.

This rule will apply not only to developers using the Google Play store, but also to those using other platforms or sideloading (installing from external sources).

Why is Google taking this step?

According to Google research, over 50 times more malware is spread through downloads from the Internet than through Google Play.

The innovations will be aimed at reducing the number of attackers who hide their true identity to spread viruses, commit financial fraud, and steal user data.

Android will remain an open platform. Users will still be able to install applications from alternative sources, but now every developer who wants to distribute their product on Android devices will have to go through verification.

What will change for developers?

Developers will be required to provide their official details: full name, address, email, and phone number. For independent developers and freelancers, this may mean registering as a business to keep their personal details private.

Similar changes have already been introduced by Apple in the European Union, where developers are required to provide their “merchant status” to host new apps under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

For students and amateur developers, Google has provided a separate type of developer account, taking into account their needs, which are different from those of commercial companies.

Stages of implementation of new rules

Initially, Google will allow interested developers to sign up for early access starting in October 2025 to test the system and provide feedback.

Verification will be implemented for all developers in March 2026. By September 2026, any app installed on an Android device in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will have to meet the new requirements.

Starting in 2027, the requirements will begin to spread worldwide.

These changes, according to experts, should significantly impact the Android ecosystem, increasing its security and reducing risks for users.

As a reminder, Google has officially launched the Preferred Sources feature, which allows users to customize their search results.
