Darts is mourning one of its favourite sons after the death of five-time world champion Eric Bristow on Thursday. He was 60.
Bristow suffered a heart attack after attending a corporate event in Liverpool on the eve of the Premier League at the Echo arena.
Professional Darts Corporation announced his death halfway through the game, we fans breaking into spontaneous rendition of “there’s only one Eric Bristow”. Rod Studd stopped to comment out of respect.
Later, he called crafty Cockney’ “the biggest star Darts yet was not”.
It was a tribute to the man, the MPC Chairman Barry Hearn called a “legend”.
One of the first Darts players’ superstar, Bristow won five titles in the British organization Darts, dominating the sport in the period between 1980 and 1986. His first title, defeated 5-3 Bobby George, started their dynasty.
