Ruben Amorim remains confident he can turn around Manchester United but knows there will be “consequences” for poor results as he manages his struggling and goal-scoring side against Real Sociedad.
Erik ten Hag's successor has faced more setbacks than successes since being appointed in November, with the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League and out of the FA Cup following a home defeat to Fulham on Sunday.
United will be looking to bounce back against Real Sociedad on Thursday but travel to Spain with just 18 men and under mounting pressure to succeed in the Europa League.
This tournament now becomes their only chance of winning a trophy and, indeed, of participating in European competition, and defeat on the way to the final in Bilbao in May could have a negative impact on a rebuild that has gotten off to a rocky start.
Amorim has also indicated on several occasions that United's long-term goals could be achieved by another manager, but he insists his confidence remains unchanged.
Asked before the first leg of the Round of 16 tie in Spain whether he still believed in the possibility of changing the course of events at the club, the head coach replied: “Yes.
“I mean we have to see the club as a long-term project and not just solve current problems. If we win the Europa League, we will be in a great position for the coming years.
“The problems continue even in the Champions League and that is what I want to highlight.
“I understand that you guys are evaluating my season, so I'm just trying to show that I care and I really believe in the overall goal of this club. That's all. I'm trying to convey the big picture to our fans.”
Asked if he thought he could be the person to make a difference, Amorim replied: “It’s obvious.
“I know what I have to do but sometimes not having results is a problem and you have to win matches, so I know the consequences when I don’t get a win but I’m really confident in myself.
