Champions League state of play: Manchester United, Arsenal, Celtic, Newcastle United and Man City latest

Live Champions League 2023/24 group tables, results and fixtures – Man City seal group top spot with comeback RB Leipzig win, Newcastle’s fate no longer in their own hands, while Celtic’s dreams ended; Arsenal, Man Utd still to play on match day five

Midway through match day five, how are the British sides faring in the Champions League – who can still go through, who’s teetering and who is out?

Manchester City have secured top spot in Group G and a seeding in the last-16 draw after they came from 2-0 down to beat RB Leipzig 3-2 at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

The reigning champions, whose 23-game winning home run was ended by a draw with Liverpool on Saturday, looked to be heading for defeat in their next match when Lois Openda struck twice before half-time.

City only needed a point to be sure of winning the group but even that looked beyond them at the break, until a second-half turnaround spearheaded by Phil Foden saw them to victory to secure top spot as they have done every season under Pep Guardiola.

There was less good news for Newcastle, whose fate is now out of their own hands following a 1-1 draw with PSG.

For so long in the French capital, it looked as though the Toon Army would be heading home with a famous win following Alexander Isak’s first-half strike.

But a harsh penalty awarded for a handball against Timo Livramento allowed Kylian Mbappe to slot in a 98th-minute penalty, dropping them back to third in Group F.

They must now beat AC Milan at St James’ Park in their final group game, and hope Dortmund can pick up at least a point at the Westfalenstadion against PSG to leapfrog the French champions and sneak second spot.

Celtic are out of the Champions League and cannot qualify for the Europa League knockout spots after two late Ciro Immobile goals saw Lazio beat them 2-0 in Rome.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Arsenal’s four-point cushion at the top of Group B means a point against Lens at the Emirates Stadium would see them through, while victory – or a draw if Sevilla can get any kind of result against PSV – would leave them as Group B winners.

Manchester United realistically need to win in Turkey on Wednesday to stand a chance of progressing from Group A given their dismal Champions League run so far.

That would likely see them jump up into second spot with FC Copenhagen travelling to Bayern Munich, but they would still need a result against the German giants to ensure their path to the knockouts.

Even a draw this week would see them out if Copenhagen get a surprise result in Germany, while a defeat would guarantee their exit with a game to spare.

So, how do things now look across all the groups?
