Lando Norris has accused his critics of “making things up” after swapping roles with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to take pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix.
World Championship leader Piastri started the weekend in strong form, taking pole position for the sprint on Friday, while Norris was more than six-tenths of a second behind in third.
Norris lost just one point to Piastri in Saturday morning's sprint to extend the gap between them in the overall standings to nine points as Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished ahead of the McLaren duo.

Many thought Piastri's advantage over Norris would carry over into the full-distance qualifying on Saturday afternoon, but the Briton proved far more competitive and won by almost a tenth of a length.
McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri shared their thoughts after qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, finishing first and second respectively.
Norris noted: “Everyone was pretty worried after yesterday. I wasn't that far off. We just had a few minor problems.”
“I felt confident after yesterday and I was confident going into today, so it was nice to see that I was able to get back to the top.
“Three tenths is just a slipstream and not the first exit from the pit lane, so nothing to worry about. Although people like to make up stories, I felt good.
“The car has been running great all weekend, Oscar has been doing a great job, so we have to push each other a lot.”

Piastri believed he had enough speed to pass Norris again but admitted a mistake in the final sector ruined his chances.
He said: “(It's) a bit disappointing. The second lap was going really well but I made a small mistake at (Turn 14) and lost a lot of time.”
“Disappointed. I thought the car was very good again, but it's not the end yet.
“Of course, it was a good start, but there was more to it, and that's always disappointing.”
