England start Women's Six Nations title defence with bonus point win over Italy

England Women got their Guinness Six Nations campaign off to a comfortable start with a 38-5 win over Italy to secure bonus points in York.

Red Roses manager John Mitchell selected an experimental line-up and debutant Mia Wenner responded with a try after just three minutes.

Emily Scarratt, Claudio McDonald and Amy Cockayne also scored tries in the opening 40 minutes, but England had to wait until the 78th minute to add to the second half when Emma Singh scored after three successful conversions.

Gloucester Hartpury striker Wenner took advantage of her first international appearance in five years to score in the third minute, before her superb run helped Scarratt extend their lead to 14-0 shortly after.

Italy's Laura Gurioli was penalised for a foul after England's penalty attempt, and the home side earned a bonus point before half-time when McDonald collected Holly Aitchison's pass and fired the ball into the corner.

Italy were able to secure the points through Francesca Sgorbini but Cockayne ensured England ended a dominant first quarter with a successful interception from a lineout and a curling effort over the top of the net.

Sgorbini's second try was disallowed just after the break and Sadia Kabeya suffered a similar fate for England, but it was Singh who had the final say.

Mitchell's side eventually prevailed, with Sing crossing the line in the 78th minute but failing to convert any goals.
