Emma Raducanu's Miami Open performance ends with quarterfinal loss to Jessica Pegula

Emma Raducanu's remarkable victory over fourth seed Jessica Pegula in the Miami Open quarterfinals ended in defeat.

The American withstood Raducanu's pressure midway through the match and won a tough 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 victory.

The second British tennis player had many chances to take the initiative during the match, but she was unable to take advantage of them.

Raducanu converted only one of six opportunities to break Pegula's powerful serve, and although she managed to pull herself together in the second set and take the game to a deciding set, she was no match for Pegula in the third set.

Despite the loss, Raducanu's run to the final eight in Miami was her best achievement since winning the US Open title in 2021.

In her comments after the match, Pegula praised Raducanu's performance.

She noted: “It was tough. I played well in the first set, weakened a little in the second, came back, led 2-0 in the tie-break, but then everything changed.

“She started moving the ball really well, serving really well… sometimes things just come together, but I just wanted to go into the third set strong, fast and attack her so I didn't make the third set too tight.”

Pegula will face 19-year-old wild card Alexandra Eala in the semi-finals after the Filipina defeated world number two Iga Swiatek 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter-finals.

The men's tournament also saw an unexpected outcome: top seed Alexander Zverev lost to Frenchman Arthur Fils, ranked 17th.

The German looked confident in the first set until Fils seemed to find his game, securing a surprise 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in just two hours.

And Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov defeated Argentine Francisco Cerundolo in a three-set match that lasted almost three hours.
