Arne Slot left in shock after penalty shootout exit

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed surprise at Paris Saint-Germain's exit from the Champions League.

Leading 1-0 in the first leg, they quickly levelled the scoresheet despite the difficulties thanks to Ousmane Dembele's 12th-minute goal at Anfield.

Slott said it was difficult to separate the teams after 90 minutes and while he acknowledged the Ligue 1 champions had the advantage going into extra time, a 4-1 defeat on penalties (Gianluigi Donnarumma saved from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones) still felt unfair.

“Of course it's a shock,” he said.

“It might not be the best time for them to hear this, but two seasons ago we went out against Real Madrid and lost 5-2 at home, so if we are going to go out, we will do it the way we did against one of the strongest teams in Europe, putting up a real fight.

“I hope every fan around the world wished that this game didn’t end because it was just amazing.

“Both teams showed incredible level and intensity in the first 25 minutes. I also remember the first 25 minutes against Manchester City and Real Madrid, but what we showed at the beginning was just amazing.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose in 90 minutes, but if we had played 180 minutes, maybe we would have deserved to lose and go to extra time.

“In extra time I thought PSG maybe played better. Then it went to penalties and they scored four.”

A miserable evening for Liverpool was compounded by Trent Alexander-Arnold's ankle injury, which is likely to rule him out of Sunday's League Cup final.

“He had to go. That never bodes well,” added Slot, who was less worried about Ibrahima Konate, who appeared to suffer cramps while being substituted in extra time.

“From what I've heard from people who saw (Alexander-Arnold) get hurt,
