President Donald Trump said Friday that talks between Ukraine and Russia are “reaching a critical juncture,” adding that neither side is “playing” with him in his efforts to end the long war.
Mr Trump made the remarks after Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned earlier in the day that the US could “give up” on efforts to reach a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if progress was not made in the coming days, as months of efforts to end the fighting have failed.
“If for some reason one side makes it harder, we'll just say you're stupid. You're stupid, you're terrible people,” Trump said.
“And we'll just leave. But I hope it doesn't come to that.”
Mr. Rubio's stern assessment of the state of the talks came after major talks in Paris between U.S., Ukrainian and European officials that outlined steps toward peace and appeared to make long-awaited progress.
Another meeting is expected in London next week, and Mr. Rubio suggested it could be crucial in determining whether the Trump administration remains involved.
“We have reached a point where we have to decide whether this is even possible or not,” Rubio told reporters in Paris.
“Because if that's not possible, then I think we'll just move on. This is not our war. We have other priorities to focus on.”
