Two British tourists have died in a cable car crash near Naples.
Italian news agency Ansa, citing Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, reported that the four victims of the incident, which took place on Thursday in Monte Faito, included two Britons and one Israeli citizen.
According to preliminary data, a traction cable broke, which led to the cable car stopping operation.
A fifth victim, believed to be a foreign tourist, sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Some people were evacuated from another cable car.
Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into multiple manslaughter and culpable homicide, according to reports.
In a translation of a social media post, Campania regional president Vincenzo De Luca described the day as “truly tragic and painful,” offering his condolences to the victims, the injured and their families.
He also thanked the rescuers and announced the start of an investigation into the incident.
The mayor of Castellammare, Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco, announced a day of mourning on Facebook and decided to cancel all events related to Easter celebrations.
He added that a minute of silence would be held on Friday in memory of the victims.
Firefighters, police and Italian mountain rescuers were dispatched to the scene, located between the popular tourist areas of Pompeii and Sorrento.
Cable car operator EAV said the service resumed a week ago with all necessary safety measures in place.
Investigators are checking the cable car, and strong winds are being considered as a possible cause of the incident.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered her condolences from Washington, where she met with US President Donald Trump.
A British tourist said that after the incident she watched as people were evacuated from one of the cable car cabins using a safety system.
Megan Pacey, 50, from London, was with her husband James Ross and their two children, Hannah, 10, and Luke, eight, when they spotted the suspended zip line.
She noted: “We were one or two minutes away from (the incident).”
