A representative of the European Commission, Paola Pinho, stated on November 24th that the EU is pleased with the beneficial headway achieved in initial discussions about Ukraine over the past weekend, even though “substantial efforts are still required,” according to The Guardian.
She further mentioned that the EU's three fundamental principles remain constant:
- boundaries are not allowed to be altered through coercion;
- no limitations should be imposed on the Ukrainian military;
- the repatriation of all Ukrainian children unlawfully taken by Russia.
“Russia, as the instigator, must be held accountable for the devastation, and deliberations regarding the employment of seized Russian funds through a credit to offset Ukraine’s damages have become even more pressing,” Pinho stated.
Previously, the President of the European Council referred to a consistent approach as the “linchpin” for fruitful discussions aimed at concluding the conflict in Ukraine. According to Kosta, a cohesive and synchronized stance within the EU is vital to secure a favorable conclusion to the peace negotiations.
