Trump says supporters 'love' him more than ever despite Iran disagreement

Donald Trump has dismissed speculation that his supporters have lost interest in him amid uncertainty over whether he will order a US strike on Iran, noting differences between some of his loyalists and conservatives on national security issues.

“My supporters love me even more now, and I love them even more, even more than during the election, when we achieved a complete victory,” the president told reporters as a new flagpole was installed at the White House.

“There may be some people who are a little bit unhappy right now, but there are also some who are very happy, and there are people outside our base who can't believe this is happening and they are so happy,” he added.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth briefed lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Wednesday that the Pentagon was giving Mr. Trump options on how to deal with Iran, but would not say whether the military planned to help Israel carry out strikes.

“I may or may not do it,” Mr. Trump said on Wednesday. “I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do.”

Some longtime supporters of his “America First” slogan have criticized him for considering an expanded U.S. role in the conflict between Israel and Iran after a week of deadly attacks, while reminding his audience of Trump’s 2024 pledges to resist foreign interference.

Steve Bannon, a senior adviser to Trump in the 2016 campaign, told a Washington audience that strong feelings about Iraq were the driving force behind Trump's first presidential bid and the “Make America Great Again” movement, stressing that “one of the core principles is no more forever wars.”
