US President Donald Trump noted that discussions on the Iranian nuclear program are “going quite well.”
Fresh talks are scheduled for next week, Iranian state television reported, after the first round of meetings between the two countries since the Obama administration took office on Saturday.
Iranian state television reported that US Special Representative for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi “briefly discussed” the issues with each other.
On Saturday, while flying to Miami for a UFC event, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that negotiations were “going well.”
“I can't tell you because nothing matters until there is a result, so I don't like to discuss it, but overall, everything is going well. The situation with Iran is developing quite positively, I think,” he added.
According to both sides, the next round of talks is scheduled for April 19.
In a statement released Saturday afternoon, the White House described the discussions in Oman as “very positive and constructive,” while acknowledging that the issues to be resolved were “quite complex.”
“Today’s direct communication with Special Representative Witkoff was a significant step toward reaching a mutually beneficial agreement,” the White House said.
Mr Araghchi described the meeting as constructive for Iranian state television, noting that there were four rounds of messaging during the indirect portion.
“Neither side is interested in fruitless negotiations – so-called ‘negotiations for the sake of negotiations’, a waste of time or protracted and exhausting discussions,” he stressed.
“Both sides, including the Americans, have confirmed that their goal is to reach an agreement as soon as possible. However, this will certainly be a difficult task.”
