Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was airlifted from northeastern Brazil to the capital, Brasilia, on Saturday after complaining of stomach pains.
Mr Bolsonaro was hospitalised on Friday morning after suffering stomach pains while travelling in the north-east of the country.
Doctors said the pain was caused by a bowel obstruction and was related to long-term effects of a stab wound to the abdomen sustained in September 2018.
Mr Bolsonaro has been in and out of hospital multiple times since he was attacked during a campaign event ahead of Brazil's 2018 presidential election. The conservative leader underwent several surgeries during his presidency from 2019 to 2022.
“After so many incidents over the past few years, I have become accustomed to pain and discomfort. But this time, even the doctors were shocked,” he wrote in a social media post on Saturday, adding that a doctor had told him it was “the most serious case since the attack.”
Mr Bolsonaro also mentioned that he might have to undergo another operation.
Earlier on Saturday, doctors at Rio Grande Hospital in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte told reporters that the patient was in stable condition and did not require emergency surgery, and that further steps would depend on his recovery.
Doctors also noted that the transfer to Brazil was initiated by his family and will take place on Saturday afternoon.
The far-right leader was hospitalized in Santa Cruz, a small town in Rio Grande do Norte, and then transferred to a hospital in the state capital, Natal.
Mr Bolsonaro had planned to tour the region to promote his party's right-wing agenda in preparation for next year's presidential elections, although he is not eligible to run.
The region has traditionally been considered a political stronghold of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
