Greetings to The Logoff: The Trump government asserts that the United States is locked in an “armed dispute” with narcotics syndicates, after it eliminated a minimum of 17 individuals on suspected drug vessels in the prior month.
What transpired? The Trump government dispatched a communication, initially disclosed by the New York Times, to various congressional panels this week portraying drug cartels as “nonstate armed factions” participating in “an armed assault against the United States,” and suggesting the US was embroiled in a “noninternational armed dispute” against them.
Within such a confrontation, the government would possess wartime authorities to eliminate and imprison cartel participants unhindered — authorities it is already employing.
What is the backdrop? The Trump government has escalated its public statements — and activities — concerning narcotics syndicates since January, when it categorized the Venezuelan group Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist entity.
In September, the government attacked what it identified as three “drug vessels” linked to Tren de Aragua in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of those aboard; this week’s “armed conflict” labeling seems to be an endeavor to retroactively fabricate a rationale for those attacks.
So, is the US genuinely at war with the cartels? Not according to any sensible interpretation; “armed conflict” denotes something precise under global regulations, and it does not reflect current occurrences in the Caribbean.
This is not the initial occasion the government has sought to contend that the US is at war with a syndicate, nevertheless; in March, Trump attempted to invoke the Alien Enemies Act to oust Venezuelan immigrants it alleged were connected to Tren de Aragua, only to face judicial rebuke (legal proceedings in the matter are still underway).
