The Duke of Sussex has revealed his father has no intention of speaking to him and he is unsure “how much time my father has left” when speaking of his desire for “reconciliation” with his family.
In an interview with the BBC after losing his latest court case over his safety, Harry, 40, said: “This is essentially a family conflict.”
Asked if he and Charles had discussed the possibility of him helping Harry with his legal matters, he suggested the king was a liability, a comment likely to further deepen the rift in his relationship with his father and brother, the Prince of Wales.
He added: “I never asked him to intervene, I asked him to leave it to the experts.”
The health of the king, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, was noted by his son, who said: “I noted that life is precious. I don't know how much time my father has left, he won't be in touch with me because of all these security measures, but it would be nice to have contact.”
Harry, who was emotional and on the verge of tears for much of the interview, extended an olive branch, saying he would “forgive my family for their involvement,” naming Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his stepmother, the Queen, in events that have occurred since he began his relationship with wife Meghan in 2016.
He also noted that information he learned during the trial led him to believe that “some people want history to repeat itself,” apparently referring to the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
Tensions between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the royal family have increased after their interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they claimed a family member was concerned about the colour of their son Archie's skin before he was born.
In his controversial memoir, Spar, the Duke claimed William physically attacked him and that the king put his own interests ahead of Harry's out of jealousy.
In a series of interviews to promote his book, Harry criticised Camilla's reputation, saying her willingness to establish good relations with the British press made her “dangerous” and that she was trying to restore her “image” at his expense.
“Obviously, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing this book. They will never forgive me for many things,” Harry said.
