The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, is slated to encounter US President Donald Trump on November 7 in Washington. He plans to deliberate on avenues to facilitate a meeting between the US and Russian leaders, aiming to secure peace in Ukraine and obtain a waiver from US energy restrictions, as announced on October 30 by Gergely Gulyas, the Minister of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office.

Gulyash stated at a news conference that the leaders will also finalize accords focused on collaboration in the realms of energy, the defense sector, the economy, and finance.

“Some of these agreements have already been finalized, while others are still subject to ongoing discussions,” he remarked.

Orban has communicated his intention to finalize an extensive economic pact with Washington to mitigate the impact of American tariffs on the European Union.

“This gathering also presents an opportunity for the heads of the two nations to outline a strategy that could pave the way for a meeting between the United States and Russia, ultimately leading to a peace accord between Russia and Ukraine,” Gulyash further elaborated.

Orban had previously conveyed that during his scheduled encounter with Trump, he would engage in dialogue concerning US penalties targeting Russian oil entities Lukoil and Rosneft.

Gulyás further mentioned that these sanctions do not directly affect oil shipments to Hungary, and Hungary aims to uphold this situation and seek an exemption from these measures.

“Our objective is for Hungary to be granted an exemption from US sanctions, ensuring the stable continuation of Russian gas and crude oil acquisitions,” the minister articulated.

As a reminder, on October 28, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban “appears to have developed a fascination with Moscow recently” and “now seems to favor constructing a somewhat autocratic framework modeled after Russia.” Tusk highlighted that Hungary was “significantly ahead of Poland in 1989” but currently stands as “the poorest nation within the European Union.”
