Investigative bodies were investigating the causes of the arson attack on the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, which occurred over the weekend and became the latest episode of political violence in the United States.
They began investigating Cody Bulmer's background after authorities said he climbed a metal fence, evaded police and set fire to the Pennsylvania governor's mansion in the middle of the night.
Bulmer, 38, of Harrisburg, was denied bail Monday after being charged with attempted murder, terrorism and arson.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
According to the case file, he told police that he intended to attack Shapiro with a small sledgehammer if he encountered him after breaking into the building.
The reasons for the attack, including possible political or religious motives, have not yet been established.
Ballmer's mother said she had sought help for his mental health in recent days, but “no one was willing to help.”
Christy Bulmer said her son does not take any medication.
However, in court, Balmer politely told the judge that he did not suffer from mental illness.
The fire caused extensive damage and forced Shapiro, his family and guests, including other relatives, to evacuate the building early Sunday morning.
Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the 1968-built home had no sprinkler system and damage could run into the millions of dollars.
Governor Shapiro said he, his wife, four children, two dogs and another family celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover in one room Saturday night with members of the Harrisburg Jewish community.
At about 2am on Sunday they were awakened by a knock on the door from police officers.
They took cover and firefighters extinguished the fire, officials said.
There were no casualties.
Ballmer walked an hour from his home to the governor's residence and, when questioned by police, “admitted to hating Governor Shapiro,” according to an affidavit that does not elaborate on that point.
He then returned home, where police said the clothes he was wearing at the time of the incident and a small sledgehammer were later found.
