Experts to discuss nuclear deal details after US, Iran diplomats meet

Iran and the United States will begin organizing meetings of experts to discuss aspects of a potential deal on Tehran's fast-growing nuclear program, a senior Iranian diplomat said Saturday after a second round of talks in Rome.

The U.S. official said President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held “direct and indirect” discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Rome on Saturday.

The discussions at the Omani embassy led to “very good progress” in talks over Tehran's nuclear program, according to a senior Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a private diplomatic meeting, and the two sides agreed to hold another meeting next week.

Araghchi said nuclear experts will gather in Oman before he and Witkoff meet again in Oman on April 26.

Following the meeting at the Omani embassy in Rome's Camilluccia district, the American side made no immediate statements.

However, President Donald Trump insists on the need to quickly complete the Iran deal, while threatening military action.

“The talks were held in a constructive atmosphere and I can say that they are moving forward,” Araghchi said in an interview with Iranian state television.

“I hope that after technical discussions we will be in a better position.”

He added: “This time we were able to achieve a better understanding of some principles and goals.”
