Donald Trump to announce 'major trade deal' with UK on Thursday

President Donald Trump will announce a “significant trade deal” with a “highly respected nation” on Thursday, the US president said.

According to several American media outlets, including The New York Times, citing informed sources, a deal was reached with Great Britain.

PA news agency has asked the UK government for comment.

Mr Trump used his Truth Social platform to announce that he would hold a press conference in the Oval Office at 10am local time (3pm BST) about a “significant trade agreement with a major and highly respected country”.

It would be the first deal reached since Trump announced sweeping tariffs on “Liberation Day” last month.

The US and Britain are in talks over a possible trade deal, and UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the British government was “working hard” to reach an agreement that would soften the impact of the tariffs.

Britain announced on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with India that would see tariffs on Scotch whisky and car exports to India cut significantly.

The deal will also cover duties on aerospace products, electrical goods and other food products, while British consumers are expected to benefit from reduced duties on some Indian goods, such as clothing, imported into the country.
