“I aimed to recapture that precise instant when folks are surprised by rainfall,” remarked Sergio García Sánchez, the Spanish artist, concerning his Central Park cover crafted for the November 10, 2025, edition. García Sánchez has long been influenced by traditional Japanese ukiyo-e artwork and, in this instance, he referenced Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake,” which dates back to 1857 and became part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection in 1918. Hiroshige’s compelling layout, contrasting the natural world with the constructed environment, evokes a feeling of motion and immediacy, and causes a chill in the observer—an emotion that García Sánchez also endeavored to manifest.
