Libya Producing 1 Million Barrels of Oil Per Day as Country Remains in Chaos

NATO fighters killed Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his regime toppled in late 2011, in the framework of the so-called “Arab spring”. Almost seven years later, the country is ramping up oil exports, but remains divided between rival militant factions.

Libya produces about 1.05 million barrels per day (bpd) of oil, and most of it is exported abroad, primarily to Europe, Reuters news Agency reported April 6, citing a source in the oil industry of Libya.

Libya, which is a member of the organization of countries-exporters of oil (OPEC), holds the largest proven oil reserves in Africa. Oil production in the country fluctuated, as local industries and infrastructure.

A number of Libyan oil fields and hall not working due to strikes and technical failures, but the oil companies operating in many parts of the country continues on the extraction and export of oil.

Many parts of the North African country continues to witness violent clashes between rival rebel groups.

After Gaddafi was overthrown, the slave trade made a comeback, and the various groups for the protection of human rights are still reporting widespread torture and numerous rebel groups, including those who have been directly supported by the NATO coalition.
