The mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, whose purported loss of Ukrainian nationality was reported by the press, has declared his intention to challenge the determination in Ukrainian courts, and even at the European Court of Human Rights, as he does not possess a Russian Federation passport. He mentioned this in remarks to Suspilne.

Trukhanov emphasized that he had at no point acquired RF passports and pointed to examinations conducted by state institutions in preceding years. He stated that, in 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky tasked the SBU and other organizations with investigating him.

“In 2022, they discovered no Russian citizenship or passports associated with me,” Trukhanov commented, adding that the “documents” presented as evidence contained inaccuracies in the family name.

“Regrettably, things unfolded this way. Consequently, I will defend my rights, I will initiate legal proceedings. Should the national court fail to reach a decision, I will lodge an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights. This embodies a degree of, shall we say, unchecked power that is unacceptable,” he asserted.

On Sunday, October 12th, the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, revealed that he had become aware of preparations for a review of the matter of potential revocation of his Ukrainian citizenship based on the presumed ownership of a Russian passport.

The following day, a petition surfaced on the presidential web page requesting the withdrawal of Ukrainian nationality from the mayor of Odessa, Gennady Trukhanov, which rapidly amassed the necessary number of signatures.

Ultimately, on October 14th, President Volodymyr Zelensky proclaimed that the SBU had uncovered proof of Russian nationality “in certain individuals.” The telethon, citing undisclosed sources, indicated that these individuals included Gennady Trukhanov, Oleg Tsarev, and Sergey Polunin.

Upon losing Ukrainian citizenship, Gennady Trukhanov would be automatically removed from the position of mayor of Odessa, a role he has occupied since 2014. The Odessa publication “Dumska” reports that a city military administration is anticipated to be established in Odessa, potentially led by the incumbent chief of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak.
