Wakefield, inspired by the return of Max Jowitt, who scored a try and 12 points in a near-flawless performance, know a win at bottom Salford on Friday will be enough to secure a top-six finish in their first season back in the top flight.
Mason Lino got things started in the win over Hull CR, assisting the first try and scoring the second
Rovers were clearly out of step from the start, even though Jake Trueman managed to sneak a lucky deflection under the crossbar to open the scoring in the fifth minute.
Only a saving tackle from Jack Broadbent prevented Jayden Myers from missing and Rovers continued to make mistakes, with Jowitt adding a penalty after the visitors were caught offside.
Wakefield were unrecognisable from the team that had lost to Castleford last week but they doubled their lead on 20 minutes when Mason Lino burst through Rovers' static line with absurd ease.
Rovers failed to respond and even Mikey Lewis got involved, his wide interception allowing Jowitt to slip past Wakefield's goal and score the third.
A devastating tackle from Tom Davies prevented Jowitt from scoring again but Trinity still had time to end a fabulous first period when the defender sent Cam Scott's ball out of bounds and converted to make it 26-0 at half-time.
A huge celebration as Wakefield Trinity beat Hull CR 28-12!
Rovers were certainly among the challengers after the break and opened the scoring soon after the restart when Arthur Murg broke through with his first clean attacking play and then finally added an assist.
A superb Jowitt denied Jai Whitbread as Rovers piled on the pressure late on and another fine Jowitt strike put Wakefield 28-6 ahead with 15 minutes remaining.
Oliver Gildart saved Lewis's effort to score Rovers' second with less than 10 minutes remaining, but by then the visitors' hopes of winning the match with one game to spare had long since been dashed.
Daryl Powell reflects on Wakefield Trinity's win over Hull City and how his side fared against the league leaders.
Powell: 'It's a big game for us'
Wakefield Trinity head coach Daryl Powell…
“It was a big game for us. We played pretty badly last week and we knew we had to improve. I thought the first half was the best we've had all year.”
“We had to hold out. Hull CR are an outstanding team, of course.
“We know that when we’re in the game and everyone is into it, we can challenge anyone.
“I just thought it was an outstanding effort on our part.”
Willie Peters reflects on Hull's defeat to Wakefield Trinity and looks at the moments that let his side down.
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters…
“The first half was terrible, just terrible. There's not much to say really.
“They have surpassed us in every way… We need to take a good look at ourselves, that’s for sure.
“We lacked determination and desire in all areas and we had a lot to achieve.
“This is worrying.”
Hull FC keep playoff hopes alive
Hull FC kept their Betfred Super League play-off hopes alive with a convincing 34-2 win over Warrington at the MKM Stadium.
Hull are one point behind Wakefield, whose home win over leaders Hull CR gave them a head start ahead of the final round of games.
Tries from Lewis Martin, Deniv Balmforth, Aidan Sezer and Harvey Barron gave Hull control of the match at half-time.
The first three of those goals came when Wolves' Lachlan Fitzgibbon was sent into the sin bin.

Zak Hardaker scored the first three tries against a Warrington side who took the lead through an early penalty converted by former Hull star Mark Sneyd.
Jordan Lane scored a fifth try and then Hardaker also got an assist as the home side dominated a less than impressive side, with both tries converted by Hardaker.
Cartwright: 'The most complete home performance'
Hull FC manager John Cartwright…
“It was a performance we had been trying to replicate at home for some time.
“We defended our positions firmly, and the enthusiasm of the youth is hard to overestimate. I think out of 17 we had 11 local guys.
“It's nice that we held our line for the entire 80 minutes. It was probably our most productive home game this year.”
