Irishman Dies in Ecuadorian Jail After Being Arrested at Airport on Suspected Cocaine Charges

An Irishman arrested earlier this month along with his son in Ecuador on suspicion of possessing a significant amount of cocaine has died in custody.

The man was believed to be in his 60s and was arrested at Guayaquil airport, The Irish Times reported.

Local law enforcement officials say he and his son were planning to fly to Madrid with 15 bags of cocaine.

The man's son remains in custody in the South American country, which is a transit point for significant quantities of cocaine from Peru and Colombia to Europe, the United States and elsewhere.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the situation and is providing consular support.

The man is believed to have died of natural causes, but The Irish Times has been unable to confirm this.

Ecuador has faced a sharp increase in gang- and drug-related crime in recent years, and authorities are struggling to cope with a growing prison population.

An Amnesty International report last year said that nearly 600 people had died in Ecuadorian prisons since 2019.
