The Premier League's elite clubs are on the path to restructuring.

The so-called Big Six have spent more than £1bn on new players this summer and with just weeks left before the transfer window closes, those sums are set to continue to rise.

Liverpool lead the way as they look to retain their Premier League title, but Chelsea are close to their total spend, followed by Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United, with Tottenham just behind them.

So, are they on track to return to the success their fans crave next season? Or will the journey to the top be longer? Much depends on whether they can master the art of rebuilding, a process that Sir Alex Ferguson says could take up to four years.

“I don’t think it will ever happen again,” says Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville. “I honestly don’t believe it’s possible to be a manager for four or five years now. You have to be successful along that path. It’s a very different place to 20 years ago.”
