Pope Leo told more than a million young Catholics at the final Mass of a week-long gathering of future believers that they represent “a sign that another world is possible” where conflicts can be resolved through dialogue rather than with weapons.
In his final blessing for the Youth Jubilee, Lev remembered the young people from Gaza, Ukraine and other regions “stained with the blood of war” who were unable to participate in the celebration.
“We are closer than ever to the youth who are experiencing the worst disasters caused by other people,” Lev said. “We are with the youth of Gaza. We are with the youth of Ukraine, with the youth of all countries affected by war.”
“My dear brothers and sisters, you are a sign that another world is possible. A world of brotherhood and friendship, where conflicts are resolved not with weapons, but through dialogue.”
The young people camped out in vast fields southeast of Rome, attending a Youth Jubilee service on Saturday that was also led by Leo, who was flown to and from the Vatican by helicopter.
The Vatican said more than a million young people attended the event, as well as 7,000 priests and 450 bishops.
The special anniversary celebration is part of the Holy Year, which is expected to attract 32 million pilgrims to the Vatican to visit the capital of Catholicism.
During his Sunday sermon, Lev called on participants to “spread their enthusiasm and witness of their faith” when they return home to some 150 countries.
“Strive for greatness, for holiness, wherever you are,” Leo urged them. “Do not settle for less. Then you will see how the light of the Gospel grows brighter every day, in you and around you.”
