Alert level raised to highest over Indonesia volcano eruption

Indonesia's Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano has erupted, sending large columns of hot ash into the air.

Authorities raised the eruption alert level to maximum and expanded the danger zone to about five miles from the crater.

Indonesia's geological agency said the volcano released about 32,800 feet of thick gray clouds on Tuesday afternoon in a major volcanic activity.

The ash formed a mushroom cloud that was visible from towns up to 90 miles away from the mountain.

There were no reports of casualties.

Residents have been urged to exercise caution due to heavy rainfall that could trigger lava flows in rivers originating from the volcano.

The eruption of Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in November killed nine people and injured many more.

The mountain is 5,197 feet high and is a twin volcano along with Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in Flores Timur County.

Indonesia is an archipelago of 270 million people that is prone to frequent seismic events.

The island is home to 120 active volcanoes and lies along the Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped chain of seismic faults that encircle the Pacific Basin.
