President Donald Trump abruptly walked out of the G7 summit, leaving a day early on Monday as tensions between Israel and Iran escalate, with the US leader saying Tehran must be evacuated “immediately”.
World leaders gathered in Canada with the specific goal of helping to reduce tensions on various global issues, but their efforts were interrupted by the deteriorating situation around Iran's nuclear program, which could lead to dangerous and uncontrollable consequences.
Four days ago, Israel launched an air campaign against Iran.
At the summit, Trump warned that Tehran needed to halt its nuclear program before it was “too late.”
He noted that Iranian leaders “would like to discuss,” but they had 60 days to reach an agreement on their nuclear ambitions and were unable to do so before the Israeli air strikes began.
“They'll have to make a deal,” he added.
Asked what it would take for the US to intervene militarily in the conflict, Mr Trump said on Monday morning: “I don't want to talk about that.”
But by Monday evening, Mr Trump was warning ominously on social media: “Everyone should leave Tehran immediately!”
Shortly after, Mr Trump decided to leave the summit and skip several meetings on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and global trade.
As Mr Trump posed for a photo with other G7 leaders on Monday evening, he said simply: “I have to go back, it's very important.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who hosted the event, expressed his gratitude to the President for his presence and expressed his full support.
