Donald Trump said on Saturday that there would be “serious consequences” if Elon Musk supported funding for U.S. Democrats running against Republicans voting for the president’s massive tax and spending cuts, but he said his ties with the billionaire donor were over.
In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump declined to elaborate on what those consequences were, adding that he had not discussed the possibility of investigating Musk.
Asked whether he thought his relationships with the CEOs of Tesla and SpaceX were over, Trump replied: “I would assume so, yes.”
“No,” Trump replied when asked if he wanted to restore relations with Musk.
This week, Trump and Musk began trading insults, with Musk calling Trump's bill a “disgusting abomination.”
Musk's opposition to the initiative complicates the bill's passage in Congress, where Republicans hold slim majorities in both the House and Senate.

The bill narrowly passed the House last month and now goes to the Senate, where Trump-allied Republicans are considering changes.
Independent analysts estimate that the measure will increase the US national debt by $2.4 trillion over a decade.
