Mexican-American country singer Johnny Rodriguez dies at 73

Country music star Johnny Rodriguez, the iconic Mexican-American performer best remembered for chart-topping 1970s hits including “I Just Can't Get Her Out Of My Mind,” “Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico” and “That's The Way Love Goes,” has died aged 73.

Rodriguez passed away on Friday, his daughter Aubrey Rodriguez announced on social media.

She noted that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.

In her message, she wrote: “Dad was not only a legendary musician whose work touched the hearts of millions around the world, but also a deeply loved husband, father, uncle and brother whose warmth, humor and compassion left a mark on the lives of all who knew him.”

In 1972, Rodriguez was named Most Promising Male Vocalist at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and his debut album, Introducing Johnny Rodriguez, was nominated for Album of the Year in 1973.

Rodriguez was born in Sabinal, Texas, a small town located about 60 miles west of San Antonio and about 90 miles east of the U.S.-Mexico border.

In 2007, he was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame.
