Trump says he will meet Putin in Alaska to discuss war in Ukraine

President Donald Trump said he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 in Alaska.

Mr Trump announced the meeting in a post during an informal meeting and said more details would be provided later.

Earlier, the president mentioned that he would meet with Mr Putin “soon” to discuss the conflict in Ukraine and that the location of the meeting would be announced soon.

“We're going to have a meeting with Russia, starting with Russia. And we'll announce a location. I think it's going to be a very popular location,” Mr. Trump said.

The remarks came as Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines had little hope of a diplomatic solution to the conflict and Friday marked the end of a deadline set by Mr Trump to broker peace in the Kremlin.

Frustrated by Mr Putin's failure to respond to his calls to stop bombing Ukrainian cities, Mr Trump issued an ultimatum nearly two weeks ago to impose additional sanctions on Russia and higher tariffs on countries buying Russian oil unless the Kremlin acted to reach a settlement.

Mr Trump's efforts to pressure Mr Putin to end the fighting have so far failed to produce results.

A larger Russian army is slowly advancing deeper into Ukraine, losing significant forces and resources in the process, and continues to bomb Ukrainian cities.

Russia and Ukraine have significantly different views of the world.

Ukrainian troops are engaged in fierce fighting along a 620-mile front line stretching from northeast to southeast Ukraine.

The Pokrovsky district in the east of Donetsk region is bearing the brunt of the attacks as Russia tries to break through into the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukraine is facing a serious labor shortage.

Intense fighting is also taking place in Ukraine's northern border region of Sumy, where Ukrainian forces are battling Russian soldiers to prevent reinforcements from being sent to Donetsk.
