President Donald Trump has called for a special prosecutor to investigate the 2020 election won by Democrat Joe Biden, reiterating his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.
“Biden has been grossly incompetent and the 2020 election was a complete SCAM!” Mr. Trump wrote in a social media post that also sought to highlight the differences between his approach to immigration enforcement and the former president’s.
“The evidence is HUGE and OVERWHELMING. A special prosecutor must be appointed. This must not happen again in the United States of America! Let the work begin!”
Mr Trump's post came as his Republican administration was focused on a major foreign policy decision about whether to intervene in the war between Israel and Iran, and reflects his efforts to undermine the legitimacy of Mr Biden's presidency.
Earlier this month, Mr Trump ordered his administration to investigate Mr Biden's performance as president, alleging that his aides covered up his predecessor's “cognitive decline.”
Mr Biden called the investigation “a mere distraction.”
The report also reiterates Mr. Trump's long-standing grievance about a “stolen” election, even though courts across the country and Mr. Trump's attorney general in his first term found no evidence of fraud that could have affected the outcome.
The Department of Homeland Security's cybersecurity arm called the election “the most secure in American history.”
