A tour bus carrying nearly 50 passengers lost control and overturned on New York's West Side Highway, killing several people and injuring many others, police said Friday.
James O'Callaghan, a local police spokesman, told the press that preliminary information indicated that a minor was among the dead. Many of those on the bus were of Asian descent, including citizens of China, India and the Philippines.
The incident occurred on I-90, a section of the New York State Thruway, near Pembroke, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from Buffalo. The vehicle was traveling from Niagara Falls to New York City.
Some passengers remained trapped in the wreckage while others were trapped outside the vehicle as a result of the incident, O'Callaghan said.
The representative specified that the driver, who survived, was unable to maintain control at high speed, after which the bus overturned while trying to straighten out its trajectory. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The driver is cooperating with the investigative authorities, and the police have already contacted the bus operator, whose affiliation has not yet been named.
Everyone in the cabin, at the very least, received some form of injury.
The incident closed traffic on the highway in both directions, causing major traffic jams on the eve of the final weekend of the summer period.
