The oldest living person on the planet will celebrate his 116th birthday on Thursday.
Ethel Caterham, from Surrey, England, was confirmed as the oldest living person in April following the death of 116-year-old Brazilian nun Sister Ina Canbarro Lucas.
The event will be held at a Lightwater nursing home, where she plans to spend the day following “her own rhythm” with loved ones.
Mrs. Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, England, five years before the outbreak of World War I. She was the second youngest of eight children.
According to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), she met her fate – British Army Major Norman – at an evening party in 1931.
The couple served in Hong Kong and Gibraltar, raising two children. Her husband died in 1976, according to GRG records.
A spokesman for the institution where the centenarian lives said: “Ethel and her family are deeply grateful for the warm congratulations and attention shown to her in the year of her 116th birthday.

“Ethel again declined to be interviewed, choosing a quiet celebration with her family to enjoy the important date as comfortably as possible.
The previous year, the British monarch Charles III sent the jubilee a congratulatory letter on the occasion of her 115th birthday.
The longevity record continues to be held by Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived, according to the Guinness Book of Records, 122 years and 164 days.
