MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A Su-34 fighter jet crashed in Russia’s Far East, presumably in the Strait of Tartary between the Khabakovsk region and Sakhalin, a source told Sputnik Friday, adding that the crew managed to eject.
“A Su-34 disappeared off the radars in the Far East. The pilots of the second aircraft flying next to it saw two open parachutes of the ejecting crew,” the source said.
There are no other details of the incident.
The 45 ton, Mach 1.8-capable Su-34, designed to carry up to 8 tons of weaponry, has a tactical radius of 4,000 km, and a flight ceiling of 18,000 meters.
The plane can also be equipped with up to three additional fuel tanks, allowing it to fly 8 hours without refueling.
