Lucy Connolly to consider taking police action after release from prison

Lucy Connolly told the Telegraph she was exploring the prospect of taking legal action against the force after her release.

A 42-year-old man has been jailed for publicly inciting racial hatred towards asylum seekers online in the wake of the Southport killings last summer.

The wife of a Conservative MP left Peterborough Correctional Facility on Thursday.

Commenting on her legal plans, Mrs Connolly told the Telegraph: “I will be looking into it. I don't want to go into details until I have legal advice, but I believe the police have been unfair in their handling of my case and I will hold them to account.”

In a statement, the Crown Prosecution Service said she said the comments had been “seriously twisted and used against me” after she admitted to having anti-migrant views during questioning.

A CPS press release on September 2, issued after her confession, quoted Frank Ferguson, head of the Special Terrorism Unit: “When interviewed by officers, Lucy Connolly displayed entrenched views on immigration, expressed an aversion to immigrants and expressed a belief that children were not immune to their influence.”

The Northampton woman, a former nanny, pleaded guilty to distributing material inciting racial hatred through Platform X and was given a 31-month sentence at Birmingham Crown Court last autumn.

On July 29, 2024, her X post read: “Mass deportation now, burn down every fucking hotel full of these bastards, I don't care… if that makes me racist, so be it.”

The woman's release came after serving 40% of her sentence under automatic parole rules.

Mrs Connolly will remain under supervision as part of her parole regime until she completes her sentence.

In her first public interview since her release, for Dan Wootton's YouTube show, she said: “I should never have said what I said. It was wrong. But I'm not a far-right activist. I'm not a far-right thug.”

She continued: “You're suppressing people's opinions. It's like a game of 'labeling.' Call them bad and they'll shut up.”
