Clashes erupt across UK asylum protests mount

Protests against hotels housing people seeking shelter were held across the United Kingdom, and clashes occurred between law enforcement officers and protesters.

Actions under the slogan “Abolish the Asylum System” took place in key towns and cities across England, including Bristol, Exeter, Tamworth, Cannock, Nuneaton, Liverpool, Wakefield, Newcastle, Horley in Surrey and Canary Wharf in London.

Aberdeen and Perth in Scotland, and Mold in Flintshire, Wales, also held protests.

The Stand Up to Racism group held separate rallies in Bristol, Cannock, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Wakefield, Horley and Long Eaton, Derbyshire.

In Bristol, mounted police deployed to separate disputants in Castle Park clashed with demonstrators.

A 37-year-old woman has been taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency services worker.

Avon and Somerset PC said there were no serious injuries to the officers and no hospitalisation was required, but investigations would be carried out into the attacks.

Chief Inspector Keith Smith said: “Our main focus today was to ensure that the protests were lawful and peaceful for both sides.

“Our employees have stood up to a very difficult situation with dignity, and I thank them for their professionalism.

“Despite some unrest, we are pleased that both events ended without significant incident.”
