A British couple have died tragically in a cable car accident near Naples.
Graham Wynne (65) and Elaine Wynne (58) were among four victims killed in the incident on Thursday in Monte Faito in Castellammare di Stabia, according to local media reports.
It was also reported that an Israeli citizen was killed in the incident, and a fifth person, presumably a foreigner, was seriously injured.
According to preliminary information, a traction cable broke, which led to the cable car stopping operation.
Some people had to be evacuated from another cable car.
Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into multiple counts of manslaughter and disaster-related charges.
In a message posted on social media, Campania regional president Vincenzo De Luca described the day as “truly tragic and painful” and offered his condolences to the families of those killed and injured.
The mayor of Castellammare, Luigi Vicinanza Sindaco, announced on Facebook plans to declare a day of mourning and cancel all events related to Easter celebrations.
Firefighters, police and Italian mountain rescuers arrived at the scene, located between the popular tourist destinations of Pompeii and Sorrento.
The EAV transport company, which operates the cable car, noted that traffic was restored a week ago in compliance with all safety standards.
