'It's pretty funny': Woodpecker attacks car mirrors in Massachusetts village

Residents of Rockport, Massachusetts, who used stockings as slings to hurl rocks at British soldiers during the War of 1812, now hang trash bags and towels from the side mirrors of their cars to protect them from an aggressive woodpecker.

In recent weeks, the crested woodpecker has damaged more than two dozen mirrors and at least one side window of the car.

However, the residents of this small fishing village take the situation with humor.

“Everyone laughed at it,” Ben Favaloro said.

“Nobody wants to harm the bird. He will always be a welcome guest.”

Mr Favaloro, who has lived in the area for nearly 40 years, said he had occasionally spotted woodpeckers on the walls of houses in the past and last summer he cut down several trees that were badly damaged.

However, attacking glass is a new phenomenon.
