Tesla has agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit involving a man who died in 2021 after his car suddenly accelerated on its own, crashed and caught fire. The lawsuit alleges that Elon Musk's company repeatedly accelerated without explanation, Reuters reported.
Tesla has reached a settlement in federal court in San Francisco with the family of the victim of a fatal 2021 crash in Ohio, although the terms have not been made public.
Sudden acceleration without warning?
The lawsuit filed against Tesla alleges that its “vehicles allegedly accelerated on their own suddenly and without explanation hundreds of times.”
The family of a man who died in an accident is accusing the company of also suddenly increasing speed in Clyde Leach's Model Y, leaving the road and hitting a pole, causing burns and many other injuries that were the direct cause of the death of the 72-year-old driver.
Tesla and lawyers for the victim's family have disclosed the settlement, but not its terms, Reuters reports. Tesla denies any wrongdoing and blames the deceased driver for the accident. A jury trial is scheduled for April 2026.
Problems with autopilot
Tesla, in turn, has had a problem with Autopilot before. In 2024, the company reached a settlement in a case in which an Apple engineer died after his Model X, operating on Autopilot, veered off the highway. However, there are many more lawsuits against Elon Musk's company.
