Russia begins blocking messaging app Telegram

The Russian communications watchdog said Monday that it has begun enforcing a nationwide ban on the popular messaging app, Telegram.

Telecommunications providers were ordered to block the telegram to Russia after a court last week sided with the authorities, who demanded that the app be out of the country before he will give the keys to encrypt the data.

Russian authorities claim that the telegram, which was developed by the Russian entrepreneur Pavel Durov, has been used by extremists. The company claims that the Russian intelligence services FSB violates the rights of the consumer.

The telegram was briefly unavailable to users early in the afternoon on Monday, but returned later in the day. Durov said last week, the latest version will have a “built-in” function, which could circumvent the ban.

“We believe that the decision to block the app to be unconstitutional, and we will continue”, – he said in a statement posted on social networks on Monday.

Features privacy made telegram messaging app for many Russian officials. The Kremlin used it to organize phone conferences with journalists.

The press service of the President of the Russian Federation announced Monday that he will now use another app.
