Naomi Osaka shocks everyone by beating Coco Gauff to reach US Open quarterfinals

Naomi Osaka produced a flawless performance to book her place in the US Open quarterfinals with a 6-3 6-2 victory over third seed and home favourite Coco Gauff on Monday.

Osaka, the 2018 and 2020 Flushing Meadows champion, made the perfect start by breaking Gauff's serve in the first game, leaving the American on the back foot for much of the first set, trailing 4-2.

Gauff had moments of brilliance, most notably when she hit a backhand winner in the first set that drew applause from the crowd and Osaka herself, but her opponent proved too strong.

Osaka won the first set on the first point after Gauff made two double faults, and won a total of 16 points compared to Osaka's five in the first set.

Osaka broke Gauff in the second set to lead 5-2, but Gauff kept making mistakes. Gauff, serving to enter the match, started the match strongly with an ace, but Osaka quickly took a match point and secured her place in the quarterfinals after the 2023 US Open champion won the set.

Osaka reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open.

In total, Gauff made 33 unforced errors and hit only eight winners during the match, losing to her opponent after an hour and four minutes.

“I'm a little sensitive and I don't want to cry. To be honest, I had a lot of fun here,” Osaka said after her win.

“Two months after my daughter was born, I was in the stands watching Coco. I just really wanted to get out there and play.

“It's definitely something special. Honestly, I admire her [Gauff] a lot. I think the way she carries herself is really something special.”

“To be such an amazing role model at such a young age is a gift and a talent, and I have the utmost respect for her.”

Highlights of the US Open match between Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka

Sky Sports' Tim Henman said the difference between Gauff and Osaka is their mentality.

“When you talk about someone being in their comfort zone, it means they have a really clear mindset, and Osaka had that,” Henman said.

“When you think about the other side of the court where Gauff is, it looks like she was completely lost. It's very intense. She's so focused on her serve, like all of us. It's very difficult to play your best tennis with that mindset, especially against a world-class player.”

Sky Sports' Marion Bartoli added: “Osaka was absolutely incredible from the start. She completely dominated the back of the court.”

“Of course Coco isn't playing her best tennis, but I think it's fair to highlight how good Naomi was because for me to come back and perform for the first time against Ash in this tournament was absolutely outstanding.”
