Men's Hundred Qualifier Highlights: Trent Rockets Take Lead After Rout Of Northern Superchargers

The Trent Rockets have progressed to Sunday's men's Hundred final against the Oval Invincibles at Lord's after a turbulent qualifying match against the Northern Superchargers at Kia Oval on Saturday night ended in disaster.

The Rockets made progress, finishing second in the league ahead of the third-place Superchargers.

The Superchargers went 119-5 in 75 pitches despite two rain delays, and the third downpour came just as the Rockets began a revised 134-pitch chase in 75 pitches, with Superchargers punter Jacob Duffy starting the outfield.

The Rockets' request was changed from 55 to 105, but the rain returned after only five of them at 12-0 – Tom Banton was six not out and Joe Root was not out – and play was not resumed until 9.58pm, when the 25-ball chase ended.

Results Summary – Northern Superchargers vs Trent Rockets

Northern Superchargers 119-5 off 75 balls: Dan Lawrence (44 off 31 balls), Dawid Malan (29 off 19 balls), David Miller (28 off 10 balls); David Willey (2 off 22 off 20 balls), Marcus Stoinis (2 off 28 off 15 balls), Rehan Ahmed (1 off 22 off 10 balls)

Trent Rockets 12-0 from five balls: Tom Banton (6 no 4), Joe Root (1 no 1)

David Willey's side will now be looking to stop the Invincibles from securing a third successive title and their second Hundred trophy, having previously won the tournament under Lewis Gregory in 2022.

Rockets reach the finish line, but rain will have the final say

The Superchargers' game, started 20 minutes later than scheduled due to rain, was eventful, with Willey (2-22) taking the third ball off Zak Crawley, hitting the first pitch straight into the batsman's ribs and the second just wide of his outside edge.

Harry Brooke made his four-ball roll but was then run out by Marcus Stoinis two balls later in the men's qualifier at Kia Oval.

Dan Lawrence (44 off 31) and Dawid Malan (29 off 19) were bowled by Marcus Stoinis (2-28) off their delivery, but the Australian all-rounder took two off Harry Brooke (6) after the Superchargers captain had hit four off the falling scoop.

Malan, who had Crowley as a runner after he suffered an injury that subsequently kept him out, became Willie's second victim when he rolled to a deep down at the end of a good spell for the left-armer.

Watch David Miller smash Rehan Ahmed for three big sixes

After an initial rain spell that lasted just under an hour, with the Superchargers reaching 76-3 off 50, off-spinner Rehan Ahmed (1-22) bowled Graeme Clarke (1) first ball back but then David Miller (28 off 10) made him hit three sixes off the spin in five balls before Miller was castled by Stoinis.

Rain ultimately ended the Superchargers' hopes of a trophy double on Sunday after Headingley Women's had reached the final thanks largely to Davina Perrin's stunning 42 against London Spirit.

How do matches work?

  • One hundred balls per side, the team with the most points wins. It's very simple.
  • Five bowlers can bowl up to 20 balls in an innings, including five or ten in a row.
  • The traditional six-ball overs seen in other forms of cricket are not used in The Hundred, with 10 balls bowled before the ends change.
  • The power play lasts the first 25 balls of an inning, with only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
  • The minimum game duration is 25 balls in each game.
  • In knockout matches, if the score in a match is tied, a Super 5 is played to determine the winner – five more balls from each side.
